Call 811 and the utility companies come mark what they own: the main in the street and the service up to your meter. That is where their obligation ends. From the meter to the house, and across the rest of the property, the lines belong to the owner and nobody marks them for free.
In Eagle County that private side is rarely simple. Mountain lots run long services from the road. Homes have heated driveways, detached garages, guest houses, wells, septic, irrigation and propane, often added over decades by different crews with no as-builts left behind.
What a hit actually costs
A struck fiber line means a bill from the carrier plus a neighborhood without service. A nicked gas line means an evacuation and the fire department. A cut glycol loop under a heated paver driveway in Beaver Creek means pulling up the driveway.
Against that, a locate is one of the cheapest line items on the job.
What the colors mean
Eagle Locates marks to the APWA uniform color code, the same standard the utilities use, so your crew reads our paint exactly the way they read an 811 locate.

Common questions
Doesn't Colorado 811 already do this for free?
Colorado 811 is free and you should always call it. But 811 only covers lines owned and operated by the utility companies, and their responsibility generally stops at the meter or point of service. Everything past that point is private, and no one is obligated to mark it. On a Vail Valley property that private side is often the majority of what is underground.
What counts as a private utility line?
Anything on the customer side of the meter: the water service running to the house, the gas line out to a fire pit or pool heater, electric to a detached garage, shop or gate, irrigation mains, low-voltage and landscape lighting, septic tanks and leach fields, propane runs, invisible fence, and the glycol loops under heated driveways and walkways.
How far in advance should I schedule?
Call as early as you can. We schedule across Eagle County and can often get out the same week. If you are on a hard start date, call the moment the date is set rather than the day before the machine shows up.
How long do the marks stay good?
Under Colorado law locate marks are valid for 30 days from the ticket's due date, or until they are no longer visible, whichever comes first. Snow, rain, traffic and landscaping all shorten that. If your job slides, call us back rather than digging on faded paint.
Can you guarantee you will find everything?
No, and be cautious of anyone who says otherwise. Locating is a skilled interpretation of what the equipment can detect. Unmarked non-conductive pipe with no tracer wire, abandoned lines, and depths beyond equipment range can all hide. We tell you what we found, what we could not confirm, and where you should be careful — and you still hand-dig inside the tolerance zone.
